The Edge Basement Separate Entrance project in Waterdown, Ontario, presented a unique set of challenges, particularly during the excavation phase. Owing to the design where the basement walkout originated from the sideyard and wrapped around to the backyard, there was insufficient space for heavy machinery like an excavator to operate. This constraint necessitated that the entire excavation process be carried out manually, by hand.

Manual excavation is a labor-intensive and time-consuming process, requiring significant physical effort and precision. The team had to dig out the soil to create the pathway for the steps, ensuring that the depth and dimensions were accurate to the design specifications. This task demanded not only physical strength but also a keen attention to detail to maintain the integrity of the design and the safety of the structure.

The design involved steps commencing in the sideyard, descending to a landing, and then curving around into the backyard. This led down to another landing area, finally providing access to the basement. This intricate design required precise engineering and architectural planning, especially considering the limitations and potential complications of building around the existing foundation. The construction of such an entrance demands careful consideration of the structural integrity of the home, ensuring that the new construction seamlessly integrates without compromising the stability of the existing foundation.

Executing this project in the colder months added an extra layer of complexity. Winter construction in Ontario poses unique challenges, particularly when working with concrete.
